Science Carnival -- Stephanie

Going to the Science Carnival was an interesting experience! I enjoyed being able to explore and see some of the other tables. There was a large variety of topics and activities, many of which relate to MOXI in some way. Of the other table activities, I had 2 favorites. One was a super simple air canon nearby. They used a laundry basket and cardboard circle to create the air canon. They then added a bunch of fog from a fog machine and let the guests hit the bottom of the laundry bag and watch what happened. I thought this was a really cool way to engage people in this idea that is completely different from what we have at MOXI. My other favorite activity was a fossil making station! Although this one has a more difficult application to MOXI, I thought it was a really interesting way to get kids interested in how fossils are created.

At our table, we saw a large variety of people, including many members! We were busy almost non-stop with people interested in the Mystery Tubes. I have seen lots of activity with mystery tubes at MOXI, but never so much active engagement. I am not sure if this was due to the fact that they came to the event specifically to learn something or if it was something else but it was interesting to see that people interacted with the activity differently than they do inside the museum.

  1. Love how popular mystery tubes was! What did active engagement look like? Who was your audience? How did it feel different than at MOXI? How can we make program carts just as exciting?
