making deeper learners
The article Making Deeper Learners cleared up some confusion I have had about maker spaces in general. At first, you would think that tinkering and making go hand in hand since they are basically interchangeable. However, after reading this it really created that necessary divide that classifies them into their specifics.
In my opinion, the Innovation Workshop does a great job of covering the making aspect but I think they sometimes neglect the tinkering options or approach it wrong. Making and crafting is important for all ages of course, especially for little kids because they can learn so much with less dexterity and less harm. Tinkering is more for older kids and adults since it requires some skill and capability to think through a tough problem.
I would suggest having biweekly activities that have twoish options. For example, a making and low-stress type activity with simple materials that a two year old can enjoy and a tinkering project that is more complex older kids and adults can take part in. This way all parts of the family have something to keep them busy at their level.

Totally agree. And I think that's the hope--to create space for both the making and the tinkering. Excited to see what that looks like in curriculum :)
