MAPS 1/8: WEEK 1 Angela

1. What were your initial thoughts of the activity?

  • I enjoyed watching everyone do the activity! I think the activity was appropriate for the age level it was intended for. It seems like an activity that is fun and engaging as well as challenging.

2. Edits/ feedback to the curriculum

  • I liked how Ron asked what he was holding and what it was made out of to the class before asking for predictions from the students about what would happen when he dropped the parachute.
  • Changing the way the table is set up. I think the graphing concept is an easier way for the student to be able to interpret their data.

3. Comments to the curriculum discussion

  • I agree with Julianna that predictions should be made before building the parachutes.
  • I also agree that not making the activity a competition and emphasizing that a prediction doesn't have to be right is important for a 1st grade classroom otherwise their could be some cheating/tampering with data.
  • I think that this document is a great resource and I agree that another more concise document without example student responses, etc would be helpful for us as instructors. However this might be something that each individual may need to create.

4. How would you adapt for a 6th grade class?

  • For a 6th grade class the activity could be presented in a manner where the overall goal is to design a parachute that will fall the slowest emphasizing that only one variable can be changed at a time, however, multiple variables can be tested. For example parachute size, string length, weight, etc.
    • Adding different material options

  1. I feel like I should have added a questions about what did you feel like you were missing/ wanting more of in your video of the class? Let me know how the two versions compared!
