MUS Reflection
Montecito Union School Visit
Going to MUS was an interesting experience. I think that the kids responded well to us being there where they are most comfortable. I'm sure they all love MOXI but it is not necessarily viewed as a learning environment by them. Being at their school in their lab put them in the mindset that they are doing something academic. I enjoyed watching them think and work together. I think that giving them a little more time for the discussion/group designs would be beneficial. I know time is a factor but I feel like they could use more time to discuss and come to one decision because when they're rushed they didn't really settle on something as a group.
I think having so many sparks there was a bit overwhelming. Many of us would not necessarily be useful at most times and kind of just stand back and watch. I do, however, think having at least a few is a great idea. Having one person at each table was super helpful to get them motivated and working efficiently as well as sparking ideas for them. It is also nice to have extra hands to help with tape and drop tests.
Something I noticed was discussion about whether they should hold their contraption so the washer is at 1 meter or the top of the contraption was at 1 meter. I think we need to make more distinction about this because some students were trying to make super long "strings" with their washer so it would take longer to float down when holding the washer at 1 meter.

If not a learning environment, what do you think students see MOXI as? In the ex-lab?
ReplyDeleteDo you think having MOXI staff in their classroom changed that perception for their future visit?
